Arsenal dropped points against Everton yesterday, giving Liverpool a chance to widen their lead and enhance their title hopes. However, Fulham delivered a stunning performance at home, catching Liverpool off guard in a 14-minute flurry. Even after the initial onslaught, the Reds struggled to recover and ultimately left empty-handed.
On Sunday, April 6, title contenders Liverpool suffered a 3-2 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage. Liverpool initially took the lead with a goal from Alexis McAllister, but Fulham quickly responded with goals from Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi, and Rodrigo Muniz. Although Luis Diaz managed to equalize in the second half, the Reds could not avoid defeat.
Following this loss, Liverpool remains at the top of the league with 73 points from 31 matches, boasting 22 wins and 7 draws. Arsenal, with the same number of matches played, trails by 11 points after their 1-1 draw with Everton.
This defeat marked Arne Slott's second league loss of the season, the first being a 1-0 setback against Nottingham Forest in September.
Despite holding the majority of possession, Liverpool faced stiff competition from Fulham in attack. Liverpool registered 6 shots on target out of 14 attempts, while Fulham matched this with 6 successful shots from 12 tries.
Liverpool struck first in the 14th minute, with McAllister scoring after receiving a short pass and unleashing a powerful shot into the net. However, their lead was short-lived. Fulham equalized in the 23rd minute when Sessegnon capitalized on a defensive error by Curtis Jones, who failed to clear a cross from Andreas Pereira, allowing Sessegnon to score with his first touch.
Liverpool's second goal conceded came from a mistake in front of their own penalty area. A poor pass led to Iwobi taking a shot that deflected off a defender and found its way into the net.
Muniz extended Fulham’s lead to 3-1 in the 37th minute, demonstrating excellent control after a corner, before finishing with a low shot past the goalkeeper.
The second half saw Salah and Jota create several opportunities, but luck was not on their side. Finally, in the 72nd minute, substitute Diaz found the net with a low shot after receiving a pass from Connor Bradley, but the Reds could not manage to score again.
With this victory, Fulham achieved a notable win against a league leader for the first time since 2009, when they beat Manchester United 2-0. During that period, they had lost 10 of their 11 encounters with top teams, drawing only once against Liverpool last December.
The win propelled Fulham to 8th place in the league standings, accumulating 48 points from 31 games, with 13 wins and 9 draws.
